How to write an app feature overview page

A feature overview page turns a list of capabilities into a decision aid. This guide uses a hypothetical app-locking tool to show how to define the feature, state the user outcome and describe what happens next.

Step one: name the job each feature does

Start with the task the person is trying to finish, then attach the feature. In a hypothetical Loxap app lock, the job might be keeping a private notes app closed when a friend borrows the phone. The feature is a per-app lock with fingerprint or passcode unlock. Write one sentence for each feature in that pattern: situation, action, result. Avoid vague labels such as advanced protection. If a reader cannot picture the moment the feature helps, the sentence needs a more concrete situation and a plainer verb.

Step two: show the setup and the visible response

Readers trust features they can imagine using. Describe the first action in order: choose an app, pick an unlock method, confirm the lock. Then describe what the person sees afterward, such as a lock screen appearing when the app opens or a short notice after failed attempts. Include the controls that undo the feature, like pausing a lock for an hour. In the Loxap example, a three-step setup list followed by one description of the locked state gives enough detail without turning the page into a manual.

Step three: set limits and point to the next action — LoxapA useful path from inputto understanding

Step three: set limits and point to the next action

Close each feature with its boundaries and a next step. Say which devices, operating systems or app types the feature supports, and what it does not control, so expectations stay accurate. For the hypothetical Loxap lock, note that it applies to selected apps and depends on device permissions. Then offer one action: view the setup guide, read the privacy note or join a waitlist if a release exists. Review the page whenever the product changes, and remove any feature description that no longer matches the app.
